Former England striker Darren Bent has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 35-year-old, who won 13 caps for the Three Lions and score 106 Premier League goals, has been without a club since being released by Derby County at the end of the 2017/18 season.

And he revealed live on talkSPORT’s Drivetime show on Thursday that he will not be pulling on his boots again.

Bent is one of just 28 players to have scored more than 100 Premier League goals, and played for six different clubs in the top-flight.

He came through the youth ranks at Ipswich Town and quickly established himself as one of the best strikers in the Championship with 47 goals in 117 games.

Bent signed for Charlton in 2005 for an initial fee of £2.5million and soon adapted to life in the Premier League.

Aston Villa have released Darren Bent as Derby County step up their interest in the striker.

He scored 18 league goals in his first season with his raw pace causing havoc with defences.

An England call-up beckoned for the 2006 World Cup but he was inexplicably left out for teenager Theo Walcott by manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Following Charlton’s relegation to the Championship in 2007, Bent was signed by Tottenham for £16.5million.

Two seasons later he was sold to Sunderland in a deal that rose to £16.5million and his best season came in his first year at the Stadium of Light.

He netted 24 league goals in 38 games for the club and was named their Player of the Year.

Bent then moved to Aston Villa in 2010 before loan spells at Fulham, Brighton and Derby but he suffered numerous injury problems that restricted his game time over several seasons.

The move to Derby was made permanent in 2015 but struggled to rediscover the form from earlier his career.

He was loaned to Burton for the final six months of the 2017/18 season and scored against his former club Sunderland to help consign them to relegation to League One.

Bent finished his career with a total of 217 goals in 568 matches, as well four goals in 13 appearances for England.
