Liverpool are ‘totally dependent’ on Salah, Mane and Firmino and not signing back-up could cost them, claims talkSPORT host Adrian Durham

Liverpool are ‘totally dependent’ on Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino and may regret not signing quality back-up for the top trio this summer.

That’s according to Adrian Durham, who says the front three are already ‘knackered’ after a busy summer on international duty and the Reds lack the squad depth to cover for them – unlike title rivals Manchester City.

The talkSPORT host even asked: ‘Why aren’t they in for Wilfried Zaha or Gareth Bale?’

Firmino, Salah, and Mane scored 69 goals between them last season – a huge portion of Liverpool’s total 115 goals in all competitions

Jurgen Klopp has been without his star trio throughout Liverpool’s pre-season preparations with Salah and Mane playing in the Africa Cup of Nations and Firmino lifting the Copa America with Brazil.

Liverpool will play Manchester City in the Community Shield curtain raiser on August 4 – just 11 days away – and none of Liverpool’s first-choice attackers have returned to training yet.

Klopp earlier this week bemoaned the increasingly hectic football schedule, branding it ‘unacceptable’ and pointing out that Mane, in particular, has barely had a break from playing over the past 12 months.

And. as of yet, the club have not made any major signings.

Klopp also said this week he is ‘still looking’ at transfers and is hoping to bring at least one new senior player to Anfield. But with only two weeks of the transfer window remaining, it appears Liverpool may have left it too late to strengthen their squad.

Many Reds fans would argue their team doesn’t need much strengthening after their stunning Champions League-winning season.

But Adrian Durham disagrees and says Liverpool’s reliance on their star trio and their lack of signings this summer could come back to bite them.

Salah, Mane and Firmino show off the new Liverpool kit – but will they be ready for the new season?

The Drivetime host said: “Liverpool, let’s face it, they are totally and utterly dependent and reliant on their front three.

“And by the time the season starts they’re going to be knackered already.

“Look at who they’ve got in reserve. When Man City bring in [Leroy] Sane and [Riyad] Mahrez, is that the same as Liverpool bringing in [Divock] Origi and [Xherdan] Shaqiri? No!

Saturday is GameDay on talkSPORT

talkSPORT will bring you three live Premier League commentaries every Saturday, starting with these on the opening weekend…

  • West Ham vs Manchester City (August 10, 12:30pm) – talkSPORT
  • To be confirmed (August 10, 3pm) – talkSPORT 2
  • Tottenham vs Aston Villa (August 10, 5:30pm) – talkSPORT

“Liverpool were brilliant last season and they deserved the Champions League, but they need to keep improving to give themselves the best chance of the Premier League title.

“Harry Wilson and Ryan Kent may deliver, but nobody can definitely say they will – it’s a risk.

“City have more quality to call on.

“Jurgen Klopp is moaning about the schedule, but that won’t ease the problems. What will ease the problems is going out and signing a couple of really good players who can play in those positions.

“Why aren’t they in for Zaha or Bale? Why has [Nabil] Fekir gone to Spain for just £18m?

“They’ve lost to Sevilla and Dortmund in pre-season, and last year they had a great pre-season beating City, walloping Man United and Barcelona.

“By moaning about the schedule, is Klopp trying to wind in the expectations of fans a little bit?”
