Manchester United defender Eric Bailly appeared to suffer another major injury blow as he was stretchered off in Thursday’s friendly victory over Tottenham in Shanghai.
And supporters reacted by urging the club to replace the stricken centre-back with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.
Bailly was visibly upset as he was carried off the pitch, having twisted his knee as he attempted to stop Son Heung-min’s tricky run.
The 25-year-old was on the pitch for a matter of minutes, having only just come on as a half-time substitute.
LATEST TRANSFER NEWS AND GOSSIP
It’s the latest setback for Bailly, whose persistent knee and ankle problems restricted him to just 12 Premier League appearances last season.
And he has only just returned to action, having been ruled out of Ivory Coast’s Africa Cup of Nations squad with a knee injury suffered against Chelsea in April.
It’s wretched timing, too, having impressed fans with his defensive performance in United’s recent 1-0 victory over Inter.
And after this latest injury, supporters used social media to urge the club to get a deal for Maguire over the line.
The England international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for most of the summer, but the clubs are yet to agree a fee.
The 26-year-old is valued at £80m by the 2015/16 Premier League champions and the Foxes will not budge, insisting they are under no pressure to sell, so this could be a saga that continues to the very end of the window – which closes in two weeks.
Fans are growing impatient, though, and Bailly’s injury was the final straw for many as they told executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to make Maguire a Red Devil.
