Riyad Mahrez scored a fantastic free kick with the last shot of the game to take Algeria to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final.
With the semi-final against Nigeria tied at 1-1, and with the clock running over into a fifth minute of a supposedly four-minute stoppage time period, Mahrez stepped up and proved why he is his country’s talisman.
The Manchester City winger effectively gave his country the lead in the first half as his creative cross forced Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong to deflect the ball into his own net.
However, the ‘Super Eagles’ hit back on 72 minutes when ex-Watford man Odion Ighalo stroked home a VAR-awarded penalty.
As time continued to run out, Algeria wasted several chances to clinch the victory, but were given a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box with just seconds remaining.
Knowing it would be his last opportunity, Mahrez smashed the ball across goal into the far side netting, causing elated pandemonium to break out among his teammates.
The win takes Algeria into the AFCON final where they will meet Senegal on Friday.
