Toby Alderweireld’s £25million release clause has now expired and it looks increasingly likely he will stay at Tottenham this season.

The Belgian centre-back had the clause activated after Spurs took up the option to extend his deal for another year.

This was only active until 5pm on July 25 but no team took up the chance to snap him up for a cut-price fee.

Several clubs were reported to be interested in him with Roma the most likely destination but a move never came to fruition.

Tottenham can now charge what they like if a club comes in for Alderweireld in the last two weeks before the transfer window shuts.

The 30-year-old is almost certain to stay at the north London club for the next season but could leave on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires.

In a recent interview, the defender said his mind was on the start of the new Premier League season.

He said: “My focus is on Spurs and I try to deliver the job I need to do – I’m happy and that’s it.

“Do I think I will still be a Spurs player come the start of the season?

“Yes – that’s my focus. In football everything can go quickly but all I’m doing is focusing on Spurs and being fit for the start of the season.”
